The catastrophist energy bear, peak oiler school that sees a lead lining in every passing cloud, often point to the UK's lack of gas storage as a disaster waiting to happen. Energy realists, or simply people like us who don't have a vested interest in high prices, point out that since we are sitting on Europe's largest source of natural gas, storing the stuff isn't such an issue. So the news that there are new EU rules about gas storage should alarm us:
be able to cover the loss of their main gas supply source for at least 60 days
based on demand during their coldest winter in the last 20 years.
Surely, we must fail, especially this strict and probably over prudent benchmark, if the disastrist school is right? But as, usual, the realty is different from the perception.
security standard: Bulgaria, Denmark, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Lithuania,
Romania, Slovenia and Sweden.
But not the UK. Another story that won't be on the front pages, or probably anywhere else, of the UK press anytime soon.
